Flood Plain Management

Flood Plain Management

Flood plain regulations are enforced to protect public safety and health, in addition to encouraging sound engineering practices and efficient flood plain management techniques. These methods are designed to respect the natural characteristics of waterways.

All construction must adhere to federal flood plain regulations. Regulations are established by the Federal Government and implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The County Engineer is responsible for examining construction for compliance with local and federal flood plain regulations.  The Health District assists the county when OSSF permits are obtained.

Flood plains do not prevent septic installations. However, certain installation practices must be followed when installing an OSSF in a flood plain to prevent tank floatation or damage to electrical components.
